MicroSeismic, Inc. (MSI) began in 2003 with a mission to bring passive seismic technology to the oilfield. Passive seismic in the form of earthquake seismology had been used for decades to map the interior of the earth. The detection and mapping of smaller earthquakes (known as microseismic events) was actively being used for mine safety practices and in attempts to predict larger earthquakes of importance to public safety. Our vision was that we could adapt microseismic methods to assist in reservoir surveillance, reservoir mapping and fluid injection projects whether waste disposal, carbon sequestration, reservoir pressure maintenance or hydraulic fracturing. At that time small prototype projects had already been established for mapping frac’ing. With the onset of the unconventional resource explosion in 2005 (the “shale gale”), frac monitoring took off and became our principal business.
MSI quickly became a leading innovator in the use of microseismic monitoring to listen to the naturally occurring, low-energy seismic noise emitted from a reservoir during hydraulic fracturing stimulation. MSI demonstrated that such reservoir monitoring allows an operator to directly detect patterns of fluid movement, fracture development or compaction—which ultimately enables improved reservoir management. Our proprietary frac monitoring data acquisition and analysis enabled MSI to become a world leading completions optimization company helping customers understand the interaction between the reservoir, the stimulation treatment and its impact on economics of field production and development
MSI was the first service company to successfully deploy surface (FracStar®) and near-surface (BuriedArray®) geophone arrays to monitor frac’ing in real time. Surface arrays allowed for a more technically complete description of the frac mechanisms being observed. Surface arrays also allowed for cost effective monitoring of long horizontal wells and multi-pad, multi-well field development plans. At this writing MSI has monitored more than 47,000 frac stage, arguably more than any other single service provider.
With the methods of frac monitoring well established, MSI has now begun to expand its practice into some of the other areas of opportunity for microseismic monitoring: Carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), Induced Seismicity Monitoring (ISM) and sinkhole activity early detection (KarstAlert®). We approach these new opportunities with a mature toolkit developed over the last 18 years. We also approach these new opportunities with the same spirit of innovation that led to our success in frac monitoring. These are challenging but exciting times.
MSI recognizes that in the final analysis, our strength is our people. We aim to provide an enabling and challenging work environment that allows people to grow and mature technically, professionally and personally. MSI believes that the work conditions, wages and benefits it offers to its employees are competitive and in many ways superior to those offered by other employers in this industry. MSI operates with an open door policy regarding employee relations issues. If an employee has any concerns about working conditions, compensation, or any other matter judged by an employee to be important, MSI strongly encourages him or her to express these concerns openly and directly with a supervisor or any member of the Executive Team.
THE MSI WAY
The MSI Way explains who we are, what we believe in, where we’re going and how we conduct ourselves in order to achieve our goals.
Our vision for our core original business is of an industry where microseismic monitoring is recognized and applied as an essential tool in the process of completing wells and managing field wide operations for conventional and unconventional reservoirs; for injection, production and storage; domestically and internationally; onshore and offshore.
With that as our vision, our mission is to be the preferred provider of microseismic monitoring services as well as the technical and commercial market leader in this domain. Our completions optimization solutions will deliver reliable, consistent answers to the oil and gas industry worldwide. Our focus will be to help customers design, monitor and optimize stimulation treatment and field wide development programs and better understand the interaction between the reservoir, the operation and its impact on field and reservoir economics. Our commitment is to operate at all times with the highest level of safety, environmental awareness, technical completeness, professionalism and integrity. We truly believe, as our motto says, that a better frac will make for a better world.
As we move into new opportunities beyond frac monitoring, our vision has not changed so much as it has broadened to one where we see microseismic technology contributing in many more areas than just well completion monitoring. Our mission continues to be that MSI will be the preferred provider of microseismic monitoring services in these expanded areas of application as well as the technical and commercial market leader.
