As Seen on TV

By: Peter M. Duncan

I'm not a big TV watcher, but recently a commercial caught my attention because it was about…natural gas. I did a double take the first time; Exxon had done a succinct, neat job of explaining the frac'ing process, right in my living room. Now Conoco has done the same.

ConocoPhillips CEO James Mulva said, "We need to directly address the public's perception on natural gas and hydraulic fracturing as companies and as an industry. We need to speak more directly to the public's perceptions."

This type of corporate leadership and strategy to educate the public isn't cheap and a daunting challenge. But it's exactly what we need to see from the nation's biggest oil and gas players. Only when the giants who have been accused for so long of improper, unsafe practices step up to educate and defend themselves can we begin to really dispel the false rumors that surround our industry.

Industry leaders say we have as much as a 100-year supply of natural gas in U.S. shales. And we know that those resources can be extracted safely, using the best technology in the world. It's time that the general public, who consume these vast quantities of energy, get it too.
